Description
Licor Beirao takes its name from the Beira region of central Portugal, where it has been distilled since the late nineteenth century from a secret blend of herbs, seeds and plant distillates the makers say are gathered from several continents. Sweet and aromatic at 22%, it counts among Portugal's national drinks, a fixture in homes and bars across the country.
Mint, cinnamon and lemon verbena lead a full, sweet, herbal palate over gentle spice. The Portuguese drink it chilled or over ice with a slice of lemon, and it has become a popular long drink as the Caipirao, a caipirinha built on Beirao in place of cachaca. Behind the bar it works as a sweet, aromatic herbal modifier, lifting citrus sours and lengthening into a refreshing highball.
