Description
Tatratea is a Slovak tea liqueur range from the Tatra mountains, black tea plus mountain herbs sold across many strengths. This Aronia and Black Currant edition sits at the gentler end of the ladder at 27%, layering dark berry over the house black tea base with honey, lemon and cinnamon in support. It follows the modern Tatratea recipe drawn from the region's old tradition of simple herbal infusions, here pointed toward tart orchard and hedgerow fruit.
The nose is sweetish with dried berries. The palate is slightly bitter, sweet and sour with chocolate notes and berries, the finish long and bitter. The lower strength makes this one of the more mixable entries in the range, easy to pour at a useful measure without overwhelming a drink. It brings berry depth, a sweet sour balance and a gentle bitter backbone, useful in a berry forward highball, over ice with soda or stirred into iced tea. The chocolate edge also makes it a tidy companion to dark fruit desserts. Serve chilled or over ice.
