Description
Becherovka has been made in Karlovy Vary, the Bohemian spa town once called Carlsbad, since the early nineteenth century, when it began as a digestive tonic at Josef Becher's pharmacy. Around twenty herbs and spices go into the secret recipe, blended by a tiny handful of people, and locals call it the thirteenth spring of a town famous for its twelve healing springs. It is bottled at 38%.
Cinnamon and clove lead a warm, spicy nose, the palate herbal and balanced, gently sweet with a clean bitter finish. The Czech bar classic is the Beton, simply Becherovka and tonic over ice with a wedge of lemon, which shows off its sweet spice and bitterness as a long drink, and it works as a baking spice note in stirred winter cocktails. Otherwise serve it well chilled as a digestif.
