La Venenosa Costa de Jalisco is a raicilla from the brand founded by chef and agronomist Esteban Morales, who sources each bottling from an individual tabernero. This one is made by master tabernero Don Goyo Rodriguez in the Costa de Jalisco zone, in the village of Chacala, from the Chico Aguiar agave, a wild type of Agave angustifolia that signals the brighter coastal style. Raicilla gained its Denomination of Origin in 2019, though the drink has a long clandestine history in the Sierra Madre Occidental.
The agave is twice distilled in a still built from papaya wood, an unusual rustic touch, and the spirit arrives at a gentle 38%, lighter than most raicilla yet full of character. It reads light and softly sweet, with notes of herbs and pepper, an accessible entry point into the category that still carries the coastal fruit and herbal lift of its agave.
