Description
Rey Campero Tobala is a joven mezcal made by maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada from wild and semi wild Tobala gathered in and around Candelaria Yegole in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca. Tobala is a small Agave potatorum that grows slowly at altitude, and its tiny piñas mean enormous quantities are needed for a little spirit, so batches are small. The cool climate and elevation lend it a distinctive, refined character.
Pit roasted, fermented and double distilled in copper in the artesanal manner, it is bottled at 48.6% to show the agave undiluted. The nose offers citrus, fresh herbs, soft caramel, leather and honey with light perfumed flowers, fresh rain and white chocolate. The palate carries lime, cut grass and a chocolate note, with leather, watermelon, gentle minerality and a touch of salt on the close, delicate yet layered.
