Black Tomato Gin is the kind of idea that sounds eccentric until you taste it. Distilled in the Netherlands in small batches, it builds an unusual botanical bill around tomato, prized here for its fresh, slightly earthy savouriness, then frames it with juniper, coriander, lemon peel and rosemary so the whole thing reads as gin rather than gazpacho.
The nose is light tomato over citrus and a whisper of rosemary and basil. On the palate it turns full-bodied and smooth, refreshing tomato meeting spicy juniper, lemon peel and a subtle herbal note, before a long, dry finish carrying a fine earthiness. Pour it over ice with a good tonic and a sprig of rosemary, or use it as the base for a savoury, Mediterranean-leaning Negroni.
