Description
Yoichi Single Malt Sherry and Sweet is a no age statement, cask strength release from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Bottled at 55% in 2015 as part of a Japan-only 500ml series, it pairs the distillery's heavy, coal-fired spirit with full Oloroso sherry cask maturation rather than a finish.
The sherry influence is pronounced: sherried fruit, chocolate and dried fruit dominate, with a sweaty richness and fragrant spice layered through. Beneath the sherry, Yoichi's signature coal-gas note from direct-fired distillation remains present, giving the whisky a structural depth that stops the sweetness becoming cloying. At 55%, it is one of the most characterful expressions the distillery has released in this format.
