Description
A Sherry Cask single malt from Yamazaki, founded by Suntory in 1923 in the humid valley of Shimamoto in Osaka Prefecture where three rivers meet. Japan's first malt whisky distillery, it is known for balance and a layered, fruit forward spirit drawn from a wide range of stills. This 2009 release carries no age statement and is matured entirely in Oloroso sherry wood, bottled at a full 48%.
Full Oloroso sherry maturation builds a rich, savoury frame around the spirit. Expect dark chocolate, raisin and fig with a deep, nutty sherry character, the soft orchard fruit of the house sitting beneath alongside a touch of fresh oak. At 48% the whisky stays weighty and gently spiced, the sherry leading throughout. It finishes long and warm in the balanced, rounded style for which Yamazaki has become a benchmark single malt.
