Description
A Sherry Cask single malt from Yamazaki, the Suntory distillery in Osaka Prefecture that founded Japanese malt whisky in 1923 in the valley of Shimamoto. Set where three rivers meet under soft humidity, the distillery is known for balance and a layered, fruit forward spirit. Bottled in 2016 without an age statement, this edition is given over to one wood, Oloroso sherry oak, and presented at a robust 48%.
Full Oloroso sherry maturation builds a rich, savoury frame around the spirit. Expect dark chocolate, raisin and fig with a deep sherried character, and a resinous, faintly rubbery edge with fresh oak that mark assertive sherry wood. The orchard fruit of the house sits beneath, grounding the richness. At 48% the whisky stays full and warming, the sherry giving weight and gentle spice to a long, dried fruit finish in the Yamazaki style.
