Description
A Puncheon edition single malt from Yamazaki, the Osaka Prefecture distillery founded by Suntory in 1923 in the misty valley of Shimamoto where three rivers meet. Japan's first malt whisky site, it runs a wide range of still shapes and cask types to build its layered house style. Bottled in 2022 with no age statement, this release is built around a single wood format, the oversized puncheon, and presented at a robust 48%.
Maturation in puncheons, the largest casks in regular use, gives slow, even contact with the oak and a softly creamy frame. The result is fresh orchard fruit and honey lifted by a warm, nutty depth, all carried on the rounded malt that defines the distillery. At 48% it stays full and textural, the wood giving up its sweetness gently and closing on a long, mellow finish true to the balanced Yamazaki character.
