Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a no age statement single malt from Suntory's distillery in the valley of Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, where humid air and soft river water aid the long sleep in wood. This 2011 bottling was released for the UK market as part of the cask specific series that lets a single wood type speak for itself.
Matured entirely in ex-bourbon barrels, it shows the distillery at its sweetest and most transparent, with honeyed vanilla, coconut and crisp orchard fruit to the fore and a gentle spice behind. Without sherry or wine in the mix, the clarity of the spirit is on full display. Bottled at cask strength 48.2%, it is bright and energetic, a straightforward read on American oak Yamazaki.
