Description
The 2021 domestic edition of Mars Maltage Cosmo is a blended malt from Hombo Shuzo, drawing on malt whiskies from within the group's Mars Shinshu and Tsunuki distilleries. Released for the Japanese market, this version was finished in Manzanilla sherry casks, a fino-style sherry from Sanlucar de Barrameda distinguished by its saline, chamomile and delicately nutty character.
Where many Mars expressions finish in Oloroso for dried fruit and richness, the Manzanilla finish here lends a lighter, more delicate dimension, with a subtle coastal brine and herbaceous note layered over the Ex-Bourbon sweetness of the base. At 42% the result is gentle and food-friendly, typical of a domestic Japanese market release aimed at versatile table use. The Manzanilla cask selection reflects Hombo Shuzo's appetite for less conventional wood finishes within the Cosmo range.
