Description
The 2017 vintage of Mars Komagatake, the single malt of Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, was matured across a combination of Oloroso sherry casks, Ex-Bourbon barrels and white oak, then bottled at cask strength for global release. It represents the blended-cask approach Mars Shinshu has used to add depth to its inherently clean, high-altitude spirit.
The sherry casks introduce cooked fruit, dried fig and a chocolate-edged richness, while the Ex-Bourbon and white oak contribute honey, malt extract and a nutty sweetness. At 52% cask strength the texture has real weight, and the three-cask marriage gives more complexity than the distillery's single-cask or single-wood releases. The cool Nagano mountain environment moderates oak extraction throughout, keeping the sherry influence integrated rather than dominant.
