Description
Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano, was originally opened by Hombo Shuzo in 1985 before a period of inactivity and a restart in 2011. This single malt, bottled in 2018 at 27 years old, draws on spirit distilled during the pre-restart era, making it among the oldest statements from the Nagano site. Four casks, numbered 382, 327, 570 and 1068, were vatted to produce the release, combining sherry cask and American white oak maturation.
The combination of Oloroso sherry casks and American white oak over 27 years produces a layered maturity: dried fruit, spice and wood resin from the sherry side, vanilla and gentle coconut from the white oak. At 46% and from a batch of four long-aged barrels, this is a composed and unhurried expression of what the Mars Shinshu distillate becomes with extended time in the cask.
