Description
The Mars 2014 Cask 1790 is a single cask single malt from Mars Shinshu, Hombo Shuzo's high-altitude Nagano distillery in Miyada, distilled in 2014 and matured for six years in a 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel before bottling at 61% cask strength for the Netherlands market in 2020. Six years in 1st Fill American oak at the cool, stable temperatures of the Central Alps represents a longer and more measured maturation than many of the early single cask releases from this distillery.
The additional time in an active first-fill cask has allowed the spirit to develop beyond the raw wood phase, and the tasting profile reflects it: citrus, fresh orchard fruit and honey emerge over the bourbon barrel's vanilla and wood spice. The 61% delivery preserves the full cask output and gives the whisky a firm, textured palate, with the Nagano mountain character providing a clean, fresh backbone beneath the developed fruit and sweetness.
