Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was one of Japan's smallest distilleries, running from 1956 to 2000 under Mercian, with small pot stills and Golden Promise barley as its foundation. This release is cask number 877, distilled in 1999 and bottled at 19 Years Old in 2018 by La Maison du Whisky for the French market, at a cask strength of 60%.
The maturation vessel is an Oloroso sherry butt, the cask type that was central to Karuizawa's identity. Long contact with the sherry-seasoned wood has built up the layers of dark dried fruit, dried orange, leather and warm baking spice that characterise the distillery's house style. The full 60% bottling strength delivers that profile with considerable weight and presence, a direct window into what a Nagano sherry cask from a now-demolished distillery can hold after nearly two decades.
