Description
Karuizawa 38 Years Old is a single-cask single malt from Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, bottled in 2021 by Elixir Distillers for an event release at 54.1% cask strength. The 38-year age statement is among the longest in the Elixir Karuizawa series, representing spirit distilled in the distillery's active years before closure in 2000 and held in a single Oloroso sherry cask through decades of Nagano mountain maturation.
The defining note at this age and in this cask type is coal-gas, the deep, smoky-mineral character that very long sherry ageing imparts on Karuizawa's richly made Golden Promise malt. Beneath it sits the dark dried fruit, old leather and bitter chocolate that are the hallmarks of the closed Nagano site, all concentrated by 38 years of evaporation and wood exchange. At 54.1% the whisky has sufficient strength to carry the full weight of the maturation, and a little water draws out the fruit and spice that underpin the coal-dark surface.
