Description
Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until its closure in 2000. Under Mercian, it used imported Golden Promise barley, small pot stills and an overwhelming preference for Oloroso sherry maturation, building a profile of rich, darkly fruited spirit that grew in global reputation after the site was demolished in 2016. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled in 2017 for the German market at 17 years old.
The Oloroso sherry cask has had seventeen years to work into the spirit. The result carries dark cherry, tobacco leaf, bitter chocolate and leather, all on the dense, concentrated base that is characteristic of the distillery. At 61% cask strength the palate is full and direct, with the sherry wood fully integrated. A single cask bottling from Karuizawa's final vintage, released for a single market and finite in supply.
