Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture distilled whisky from 1956 until 2000, when operations ceased. The site, operated by Mercian and noted for its heavy use of Oloroso sherry casks and imported Golden Promise barley with small pot stills, was demolished in 2016. This single cask expression from a 2000 vintage cask was bottled in 2018 at 18 years old for global distribution.
Eighteen years in an Oloroso sherry cask has produced a spirit of considerable richness and concentration. The sherry wood contributes dark fruit preserve, warming baking spice and old polished leather, supported by the dense, full-bodied character that the distillery's small pot stills consistently produced. Bottled at 62% without dilution, this single cask offers a direct account of Karuizawa's sherried house style at the point of release.
