Karuizawa distillery stood in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until closure in 2000, operating small pot stills with Golden Promise barley under Mercian's ownership before demolition in 2016. Japan-market releases of Karuizawa single casks were carefully allocated to domestic audiences in the years following closure, making them distinct from the European and global parcels that drew wider collector interest. This 16 Years Old single cask from the 1999 vintage was bottled in 2015 for the Japanese market.

The cask was an Oloroso sherry vessel, and the 16-year maturation in Nagano's climate built a characteristically dense profile: dark cherry compote, cocoa, dried leather and a background spice typical of the house style. At 58.5% the spirit is richly weighted without the extreme intensity of the highest-strength releases, a well-integrated single cask from this closed site.
