Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture produced single malt whisky from 1956 until closure in 2000 and was demolished in 2016. Built on small pot stills and Golden Promise barley under Mercian's ownership, its cask inventory has been steadily released over the decades since closure. This 13 Years Old single cask from the 1999 vintage was bottled in 2012 for an event release.

The maturation was in an Oloroso sherry butt, the cask format that defined most of Karuizawa's output. Thirteen years in a butt of that size concentrates the spirit considerably, producing dark cherry, stewed plum, tobacco leaf and the leathery finish the distillery consistently delivered. At 64.2% this is among the higher-strength Karuizawa releases, and the density of the sherry influence is fully preserved. A cask strength single cask from one of the last distillation years before the site closed.
