Description
Karuizawa, operating in Nagano Prefecture under Mercian from 1956 until closure in 2000, was demolished in 2016. Its single cask releases have appeared across retail and specialist event channels in the years since, drawn from a finite stock that grows smaller with each bottling. This 1981 single cask spent 31 years maturing before being bottled in 2012 as an event release.
The cask was a sherry butt seasoned with Oloroso, consistent with Karuizawa's signature approach to maturation. The flavour note recorded for this cask is leafy, a green, slightly vegetal quality that occasionally surfaces in sherry-matured expressions from this distillery alongside the more familiar dark fruit, leather and spice. Karuizawa built its character on imported Golden Promise barley in small pot stills, producing a rich spirit that responded well to the long, cool Nagano winters. Bottled at 54.5% from a single cask.
