Description
Karuizawa was a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture that closed in 2000, operated by Mercian over its five decades of production. The 1981 vintage casks are among the younger surviving stock from the distillery, and this single cask, matured for 31 years in an Oloroso sherry cask, was released in 2012 for the German market.
Thirty-one years in Oloroso wood brings the characteristic Karuizawa dark fruit, chocolate, leather and warm spice to full expression. At 62.8% cask strength, bottled from a single sherry cask by the distillery's custodians, the whisky balances intensity with the integration that three decades in quality sherry wood builds, typical of the style that made these Nagano single malts among the most documented closed-distillery releases in the world.
