Description
Karuizawa was a tiny single malt distillery at the foot of Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture, run by Mercian, which closed in 2000 and was demolished in 2016. This single cask was distilled in 1974 and bottled in 2013 at 39 Years Old, making it one of the oldest releases from a site that operated for less than five decades.
The cask is listed as Ex-Sherry, carrying the dark dried fruit, antique leather and bitter chocolate that define Karuizawa's heavily sherried house character. At 57.2% cask strength, drawn for an event market, the whisky retains a concentration typical of long-matured spirit from a distillery whose remaining stock grows rarer with each passing year.
