Helios Kura The Whisky

Helios Distillery in Nago, Okinawa, has a long history as an awamori and rum producer, and Kura The Whisky represents its principal whisky range for international export. This no age statement blended malt was bottled for the European market at 40%, matured in Ex-Bourbon casks under the island's fast-acting subtropical climate.

Okinawa sits far south of Japan's mainland distilling centres, and the heat and humidity there hasten wood extraction considerably. Ex-Bourbon maturation in this environment typically yields a warm vanilla and light coconut character, rounded out by the tropical-fruit sweetness that is typical of the house style. Without additional cask finishing, the bourbon wood's contribution is clean and direct, and the spirit sits at a gentle 40% that keeps the whole profile approachable.
