    Single Malt

    $3360

Distilled at Hanyu in Saitama in 2000 and aged 13 years in a first-fill Ex-Sherry butt before the Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottled it at cask strength, this single cask brings together the dried fruit and spice of the sherry wood with the soft, cereal-led character the Saitama distillery was known for.

Hanyu Distillery in Saitama Prefecture was built by Toa Shuzo and produced single malt from the early 1980s until it closed in 2000. The cask behind this bottling was filled in 2000, making it one of the last distillates to leave Hanyu before the stills fell silent, and was bottled in 2014 after 13 years of maturation by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society as release 131.2.

The cask type is listed as Ex-Bourbon with a first-fill Ex-Sherry butt influence, combining the vanilla and fruit of bourbon wood with the richer, darker notes that a first-fill sherry butt delivers: dried fruit, gentle chocolate and warming spice. Bottled at 55.1% cask strength, the spirit has the intensity to carry both wood influences. The 2000 vintage holds additional significance as the distillery's final year of production, giving the liquid a historical quality that the SMWS release preserves in a single cask format.
