Description
Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture operated from the early 1980s until it closed in 2000. This single cask expression was distilled in 2000, matured for 15 years in a Red Oak Hogshead and bottled in 2016 at 56.6% for the Japanese market, making it one of the later official single cask releases from the distillery's finite stock.
Red Oak is a relatively rare choice in the Japanese whisky canon, lending a drier, more tannic structure alongside the vanilla and toasted cereal notes typical of Ex-Bourbon maturation. Hanyu was known for experimental wood choices under Ichiro Akuto's stewardship of the rescued casks, and this bottling reflects that restless approach to maturation. The high cask strength amplifies the wood's contribution without losing the distillery's malt character.
