Description
Hanyu was a single malt distillery in Saitama Prefecture, built by Toa Shuzo and operational from the early 1980s until its closure in 2000. This release draws on the 2000 vintage, bottled after ten years of maturation, and represents a vatting across sherry, hogshead and puncheon casks rather than a single barrel.
The Oloroso sherry influence is front and centre, yielding rich dark dried fruit, dried orange peel and old leather with the depth typical of Hanyu at full cask strength. The distillery was known for varied finishing and a willingness to push wood influence, and this multi-cask expression sits in that tradition, approachable in structure but expansive on the palate.
