Description
The Peated release in Chichibu's Ichiro's Malt range is among the younger bottlings from the Saitama distillery, distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2016 after four years in Ex-Bourbon casks. Chichibu, founded by Ichiro Akuto under Venture Whisky in 2008, produces both peated and unpeated new make, and the heavily peated variant is released in limited quantities each year.
The flavour profile of this vatted cask-strength release is explicitly smoky, medicinal, citric and coal-like, with an oily and kippered character that points to a substantial peat level in the malted barley. Four years in Ex-Bourbon wood adds vanilla sweetness and some structure without diminishing the peat, and at 54.5% the spirit is forceful and assertive on the palate while retaining the lively citric energy typical of the house.
