Description
Chichibu distillery in Saitama, founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto under Venture Whisky, quickly established itself as Japan's most closely watched craft single malt. This is a single cask expression, cask number 2352, distilled in the inaugural 2009 vintage year and bottled nine years later, selected specifically for the Netherlands market.
Maturation in a white wine cask draws out the orchard-fruit brightness at the core of Chichibu's new make, adding ripe white peach, delicate florals and a trace of lees-like creaminess. At 63.1% cask strength the spirit arrives with energy, though a small measure of water reveals the fruit layers beneath the heat. White wine wood is an uncommon choice in the distillery's cask programme, giving this bottling a distinctive pale-fruited character.
