A sweet, dessert leaning Seychelles cane juice rum aged eight years in ex bourbon wood, syrupy pineapple and toffee giving way to honey, coffee and oak, soft and easy at 40.3% before a surprisingly peppery, spicy finish.
Description
Takamaka is made by the Trois Freres distillery in the Seychelles, and this Kreol Cask reserve is an eight year old cane juice rum, agricole in spirit though made far from the French islands, so it is best described as agricole-style rather than under any protected term. Matured in ex bourbon oak and bottled at 40.3%, it sits at the softer, rounder end of the spectrum.
The nose is sweet and indulgent with syrupy pineapple and toffee, and the palate carries that richness into honey, coffee and a woody backbone. It drinks gently and easily at standard strength, leaning toward dessert rather than the dry, grassy snap of a French island agricole. The finish is the surprise, turning peppery and spicy after all that sweetness. An approachable, gourmand pour for relaxed sipping rather than a bracing cane juice white.
