An old Martinique agricole from J.M bottled in the 1970s, ten years in ex-bourbon, deep into rancio territory with candied fruit, dates and prunes over noble oak and leather, round and dried-fruit rich at 50 percent.
Description
Rhum J.M sits at the far north of Martinique under Mont Pelee, distilling agricole from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice since the nineteenth century. This is an old release, bottled in the 1970s and aged ten years in ex-bourbon, the kind of long-rested agricole that has had decades in glass to settle further.
Time has carried it deep into rancio, the prized oxidative character of old rum: candied fruit, dates and prunes on the nose over a noble, faintly damp oak, then a round palate echoing the same dried and candied fruit. Leather sits underneath, and the spices have largely melted away into the fruit. Unsweetened at 50 percent, it is a meditative, mature pour where the cane origin has been transformed slowly by oak and age rather than dosage. A bottle for unhurried sipping, where the dried-fruit depth and old-oak character are the whole point.
