A Haitian cane-juice rum from Barbancourt under the Liberte label, smooth and light with sugarcane, dried fruit, spice and leather over a raisin-and-caramel finish, gently dry at 43%.
Description
Barbancourt Liberte Libete 1804 to 2024 is a Haitian rum from Barbancourt, the island's most established house, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. Unlike the wild village clairins of Haiti, Barbancourt works in a more refined register, distilling cane juice on a column still for a smoother, more polished style of Haitian agricole-style rum.
This release is light and approachable, the nose carrying woody spice, floral and fruity notes, then a palate of fruit, spice and a leathery edge with plenty of sugarcane running through. The finish turns to raisin, caramel and floral notes, staying gently dry. It is softer and more accessible than the turbo-charged spontaneous-ferment clairins associated with Haiti, showing the cane character in a cleaner, easygoing form. At 43% it drinks smoothly neat and serves as a friendly entry point to Haitian cane rum for those wary of clairin's intensity.
