Description
Rum Nation, the Italian house known for its tropical and European two-stage ageing, dressed this Venezuelan rum in a 25th anniversary decanter. It is a young blend, only a couple of years in cask, and it plays squarely to the soft, approachable end of the Spanish style, the kind of after-dinner pour you can offer to a roomful of guests.
The base is column-distilled molasses spirit matured in ex-bourbon wood, and the result is gentle rather than deep. Dried fruit, orange peel and a toasted edge open the nose, while the palate turns to chocolate, citrus and a touch of young, slightly bitter oak. The finish is dry with a whisper of demerara sweetness. At 43% it is smooth and easygoing, an unfussy ron that suits the end of a meal and looks the part on the shelf.
