A single cask Guyanese rum finished in a Teeling single malt whisky barrel, layering caramel, bitter chocolate and candied orange over a soft earthy base, bottled by Maison Ferrand at a full 53.6% with dried fruit and warm wood spice.
Description
Bottled by Maison Ferrand under its Planteray label, this is a single cask Guyanese rum drawn from a 2007 vintage and given a finishing period in a barrel that previously held Teeling single malt Irish whisky. Distilled from molasses at the Diamond complex, where Guyana's surviving heritage stills are kept running, it carries the cleaner, more approachable side of the Demerara spectrum rather than the oily anise weight of the wooden pot stills. At roughly fifteen years and a cask strength of 53.6%, it sits firmly in enthusiast territory.
Maturation in Ex-Bourbon casks laid down the toffee and vanilla frame, while the whisky finish adds a malty edge and a dusting of dried fruit. The aroma leads with chocolate, caramel and a faint earthiness; the palate brings candied orange, more caramel and a woody, peppery spine. Notably the whisky cask reads as accent rather than disguise, leaving the orange and cacao of the rum intact. Tropical ageing in Guyanese heat explains the depth of colour and the firm oak at this age.
