A 12 year old Hampden carrying the lighter HD mark, bottled by Transcontinental Rum Line, balancing tropical fruit and creme brulee with gentle warmth at 55.9%, an easy-drinking, low-ester take on the funk house.
Description
Transcontinental Rum Line, the well-regarded label from French house La Maison du Whisky, selected this single cask Hampden distilled in 2012. Hampden is the reference point for Jamaican high-ester funk, but this carries a lighter Hampden distillery mark and sits in the more relaxed, accessible part of the range rather than chasing the screaming DOK intensity.
Matured in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at cask strength 55.9%, it opens fresh and fruity with citrus and pineapple, the palate turns to banana, tropical fruit and creme brulee with a warm, naturally sweet feel, and the finish brings mango, honey, freshness and a touch of coffee. Twelve tropical years have rounded the spirit and built gentle oak without burying the fruit. This is the sweet spot for drinkers who like Hampden but want something gentler than the wild funk monsters, a fruity, warming, low-ester pour that stays drinkable at strength and offers plenty of character without the solvent assault.
