Description
Medine Estate's Penny Blue is the single-cask rum line from one of Mauritius's old sugar estates, and this 2011 is a thirteen year old single cask matured in a sherry cask, distilled from molasses and bottled unsweetened at cask strength.
This one has taken on the sherry cask completely, so the wood leads. The nose is fruity and liquorous with dried fruit, raisin and an alcoholic lift, the palate carries sherry, cherry and dried fruit, and the finish stays on sherry, tannins and dried fruit. At 60% it is rich and powerful, the sherry influence giving it a sweet-fruited depth though the rum itself is dry and unsweetened. A bold, sherried single cask for drinkers who like their tropical-aged rum wrapped in dark dried-fruit oak.
