N. Kröger Wagemut Connecticut Shade (Aficionado Collection)

This N. Kroger release under the Wagemut name takes Jamaican high ester distillate and turns it into something closer to a fruit aperitif than a classic rum. At 42.8% and very sweet, it is built for indulgence and cigar pairing rather than neat contemplation, and it makes no pretence otherwise.

The molasses base brings genuine Jamaican ester fruit, apricot, citrus and tropical notes that read almost like a stone fruit liqueur, but the sweetness is heavy and there is a sour, fermented edge through the finish with vinegar and apricot lingering. The texture is rounded and thick. Drinkers who enjoy dessert sweet, fruit driven styles and want island esters without the burn will find plenty here, while anyone after a dry, balanced rum should look elsewhere in the range.
