Description
A 24 year old Barbados rum from the 2000 vintage, bottled by Rum Artesanal, the German house working in the unsweetened, full proof tradition. Drawn from West Indies Rum Distillery stock in Bridgetown, it sits firmly in the dry, smoky Rockley style rather than the soft toffee idiom of much Barbados rum.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, it is herbal and savoury rather than sweet: honey, citrus and flowers over young wood on the nose, then saffron, cardamom, bitter orange and a specked smoke across a varied, demanding palate, with chamomile and kumquat on the finish. The bitter orange note is distinctive and the whole rum rewards close attention, dry and complex throughout. Certified unsweetened, at a measured 46.9%, an affordable way into the deeper, more challenging side of Barbados.
