Velier Papalin 2023

Despite its island home, this is a molasses rum from Reunion rather than a cane-juice agricole, bottled by Velier under its Papalin label as a more approachable, blended counterpart to its single cask releases. Reunion is best known for Savanna and the long fermentation, high ester Grand Arome style, and that funky, fruit forward fingerprint comes through clearly here.

The blend has spent serious time in ex-bourbon wood, so the strawberry, honey and tropical fruit sit alongside earthy, herbal and spicy notes with a polished oak frame. At 50% it is firm but balanced, bottled without added sugar, and it keeps a slightly musty, characterful edge that settles with air in the glass. It makes an easygoing introduction to Reunion's traditional rums, equally at home sipped neat or carrying a robust cocktail.
