A 2008 single-vintage Venezuelan ron from the makers of Diplomatico, soft and dessert-leaning with caramel, chocolate, sweet tropical fruit and gentle baking spice, a touch older and spicier at 43% but still an easy, relaxed after-dinner glass.
Description
Diplomatico, sold as Botucal in some markets, is made by Destilerias Unidas in Venezuela, a house that builds its rums from a mix of pot and column distillation and a base of molasses and cane honey. This Single Vintage 2008 is a thirteen-year-old molasses expression matured in ex-bourbon casks, drawn from a single year and bottled at a slightly firmer 43%.
The profile stays true to the smooth Venezuelan template: tropical fruit, leather, baking spice and molasses on the nose, then a sweet, spicy palate of chocolate and ripe fruit running into milk chocolate and green fruit on the finish. The extra age and the higher strength give it a little more spice and grip than the standard range, though it remains soft and easy rather than powerful. Sweetness is part of the character here, so it is best read as a gentle, dessert-style sipper for unhurried evenings, not a dry or cask-strength pour.
