A 7 Year Old Savanna from Reunion, bottled by Berry Bros and Rudd for Kirsch at a fierce 65%, this single cask leans hard into an aggressive red wine finish of dark berries, oak and tannin, an experiment for full proof drinkers.
Description
This Savanna comes from Reunion, distilled in 2016 and bottled by the long established London house Berry Bros and Rudd for Kirsch Import. Savanna is a versatile Reunion distillery, and at seven years and a hefty 65% this single cask has been pushed in a deliberately extreme direction by a heavy red wine cask, making it more of an experiment than a showcase of the distillery's usual fruit.
The wine finish dominates here: dry red berries, oak and firm tannin sit alongside bergamot and a burnt, roasted edge, with the high strength very much present. The distillery's own tropical fruitiness is largely subsumed beneath the cask, so this is one for drinkers who actively enjoy intense, dry, wine finished spirits at full proof and do not mind that distillery character takes a back seat. Water is essential, and it remains a divisive, polarising pour rather than an easy crowd pleaser.
