A young cask strength Guadeloupe agricole from Carrere under the Montebello label, the Zenga Gold from the 2021 vintage at a forceful 60%, gourmand with honey and brioche over baked apple, bourbon notes and peppery spice.
Description
Montebello, made by the Carrere distillery on Basse-Terre, is a traditional Guadeloupe agricole house working from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice under the island's IGP. This Zenga Gold Edition is drawn from the 2021 vintage, distilled from yellow and red cane and bottled unsweetened at full cask strength.
Aged around eighteen months in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-rye whisky casks and bottled at 60%, it leans gourmand despite its youth. The nose is rich with honey, brioche, ripe fruit and wood, the palate turns sweet and balanced with a clear bourbon-cask influence and lively spice, and the finish brings baked apple, pepper and cinnamon at length. The whisky-cask maturation gives it a pastry-like warmth over the cane core, and the high strength carries it well, making a bold, full-flavoured young agricole for those who enjoy a sweeter, oak-driven white.
