A 17 year old Marie Galante agricole from Bielle, pressed from fresh cane juice in 2004, distilled on both pot and column stills and aged long in ex-Bourbon oak, bottled unsweetened at 47.8 percent.
Description
This Bielle vieux is a 2004 vintage from Marie Galante, aged seventeen years in ex-Bourbon oak and bottled from a carafe in the distillery's older style. Unusually it blends pot and column still distillation, pairing the fuller texture of the pot with the cleaner cane character of the column.
Seventeen years is a long maturity for French-island rum, and warm climate ageing tends to carry an agricole well beyond its stated age. Expect deep wood, baking spice, dried fruit and cocoa layered over the grassy cane core, drier and more spice led than a sweet molasses rum of the same age. Unsweetened at 47.8 percent, this is a mature, contemplative Marie Galante bottling.
