That Boutique-y Rum Company, the UK bottler known for honest, no-additive selections and playful labels, drew this six-year Colombian rum from Casa Santana. Bottled unsweetened at cask strength, it is a transparent counterpoint to Colombia's softer, solera-leaning house styles, with the spirit and oak left to do the work.
The make is column-distilled molasses rum matured in ex-bourbon and bottled at a robust 57.7%. The nose is fruity and alcoholic with overripe notes and vanilla, the palate brings caramel, vanilla, sugar-sweet wood and allspice, and the finish turns tannic, herbal and woody. At full strength it shows its proof, so a little water settles it.
