A single cask Mauritian molasses rum from New Grove, 2015 and eight years old with a whisky-cask finish at 46%, where whisky-cask character and varnished oak dominate over a quiet molasses base, an unusual whisky-led crossover.
Description
Made by Grays under the New Grove label, this Savoir Faire is a Mauritian rum distilled from molasses rather than cane juice, set apart from the island's agricole-style bottlings. This single cask was aged eight years from a 2015 distillation and given a whisky-cask finish before bottling unsweetened at 46%.
The whisky cask leaves a heavy mark. The nose is dominated by whisky and varnished wood, and the palate stays firmly in whisky-cask territory, with the molasses spirit's own character struggling to push past the finish. This makes it a crossover bottling aimed at whisky drinkers more than rum traditionalists, drier and woodier than a typical aged molasses rum. An atypical, whisky-forward Mauritian single cask for those curious about cask experiments rather than classic island character.
