A cask-strength Madeira rum from Engenhos do Norte’s 970, finished in brandy casks and bottled at 53.9%, dry and grape-driven with dark chocolate and spice, an agricole-style pour with a distinctive wine-cask twist.
Description
This 970 Cask Strength Edition is a brandy-cask Madeira rum from Engenhos do Norte, distilled on a column still from fresh cane, vintage 2016, aged seven years and bottled at 53.9%. Madeira's cane-juice rums sit in their own niche, and this full-proof, brandy-finished release leans into a dry, vinous character that sets it apart from typical molasses rum.
The nose is woody and fruity with clear brandy and grape notes, while the palate brings wood, fruit, brandy character and a chocolate edge. The finish stays woody, with grapes, dryness and more brandy. The wild, grassy cane character typical of Madeira shows through, but it is the brandy cask that defines this bottling, layering grape, dried fruit and dark chocolate over a dry, slightly astringent base. At cask strength it suits drinkers comfortable beyond entry level who enjoy characterful agricole-style rum and a distinctive wine-cask finish.
