Description
Privateer Letter of Marque Single Cask 2017 comes from Privateer Rum in Massachusetts, a New England distillery with a strong following for clean, additive free American rum. This is a single cask selected for La Maison du Whisky, a molasses rum aged about five years in ex bourbon oak and bottled unsweetened at cask strength, 57.8%.
Made from American white oak ageing, it noses on bourbon, caramel, creme brulee and heat, then delivers a creamy palate of milk chocolate, cookies, cream toffee and a biscuity sweetness, finishing on hazelnut and roasted nuts. The profile sits close to a dry Barbadian or bourbon cask rum, with chocolate and vanilla oak in a younger, punchier frame. At nearly fifty eight percent it is intense, spicy and dry, with present oak and a little youthful sharpness that a drop of water eases. Honest and easy drinking for its strength, it shows off the US craft rum style well for anyone ready for a high proof, unsweetened pour.
