A 33 year old Hampden from 1990, dry and polished yet still vividly fruity, with pineapple, tropical fruit, glue and roasted oak, a single cask bottled by Rum Artesanal at a balanced 57.4%.
Description
This 33 year old Hampden comes from Germany's Rum Artesanal, a bottler steeped in the unsweetened full-proof Jamaican tradition, drawn from the 1990 vintage and the C and H selection. Hampden is Trelawny's high-ester benchmark, and at this age the distillery's signature funk has been shaped by decades of wood into something drier and more composed without losing its fruit.
Distilled on the double-retort pot still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at 57.4%. The nose runs pineapple, tropical fruit, ester and glue, the palate brings pineapple, ester and barrel, and the finish turns toasted and fruity. The long tropical ageing adds dryness and polish while the esters stay alive and the alcohol sits cleanly, making this dangerously easy to keep sipping for its strength. A mature, high-ester Hampden where age and funk are held in fine balance.
