A nineteen year old Panamanian single cask from Rum Artesanal at a forceful 58.2%, leaning dry and whisky like with smoke, burnt sugar, cocoa and coffee over peat, a bold malternative for slow sipping.
Description
RA Rum PMD 2004 is a single cask Panamanian rum selected by the German bottler Rum Artesanal, drawn from a 2004 vintage and bottled at cask strength, 58.2%, after nineteen years in ex bourbon wood. Rum Artesanal works in the unsweetened, full proof tradition, and this leans dry and characterful, a world away from the soft, sweet Panama norm.
Unusually for the region, the profile pushes toward whisky territory: smoke, burnt sugar and dried apricot on the nose, then a palate of burnt sugar, cocoa and a distinctly whisky like, smoky edge, finishing on peat, milk chocolate and coffee. A caramelised molasses core keeps it anchored as rum even as the smoke takes the lead. The result is a bold, dry, cask forward dram, a genuine malternative for whisky drinkers, made for slow, neat sipping rather than easy mixing.
